I just got an email from an old friend who gave birth a week ago to a baby boy, Jack. My friends Amy and Rich had a baby boy (David) in November. Jessica and Gar had a girl, Gwendolyn, in January. In the hopper: my friend Claire is due in June. My sister-in-law is due in October. Another old friend, Jennifer, who married yet another friend of ours from high school, is also due in October.
So that's six. And that doesn't count all the people in my department: babies Lewis, Lucas, Charlie and Camille have all been born in the last six months or so.
Ten babies, altogether. I feel surrounded.

How Nice
For years, I have struggled with carrying the burdensome responsibility of my own uterus. Now no longer. Five very ugly white men have relieved me of making decisions for myself. Even better, they've taken the decision out of the hands of those snake oil salesmen, medically qualified board certified doctors. Some of these doctors even have their own hysteria-making womb, which just goes to show you how unqualified they are to be making these kinds of decisions for other Penis Deficient Americans. Now Spermatazoan Americans and Fetal Americans can relax, safe in the knowlege that their life is protected, even if their host's is not.

This Is The Last Link to dKos
So, for the past few election cycles I've been a daily reader of Daily Kos, and I have shelved my concerns about the subtle and not-so-subtle maligning of women and women's issues because I wanted to be in touch with an active, Democratic, political community. But this is it. I am done. I am tired of our so-called allies always telling us that "women's issues" are "special issues" and need to be put aside until 1) we win the next election 2) and the one after that 3) and the boys' pet issues are taken care of and until then, why don't we all just be good girls and sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up. The mens will take care of it for us.
Kos' original post is appalling. "Women's studies types?" WTF? I guess Kos' wife, who just had their daughter not too long ago, wasn't one of those mean old women's studies types in college. And, for damn sure, his daughter better not be! But the comments that follow are absolutely terrifying. They are almost word for word what one would read on a far right site like Free Republic or Little Green Footballs (and no, I'm not linking that shit). All the old tropes are there: feminists are man hating, bra burning, hysterical, mindless, humorless drones who want to take all the fun out of life. It's getting pretty goddamned boring to listen to this shit. What has it been, forty years now? and before that, another sixty? and men are still covering their genitals when the big bad women walks by with her magical sperm-zapping powers. Christ, boys, grow up.

The Great Irony Machine Continues to Function
At a White House event, the Preznit almost re-creates the streets of Baghdad as he attempts to put an electrical plug into the hydrogen tank of the hybrid he's unveiling. The head of Ford, fearing for his life (but not as much as he should fear for it now, considering that he made this story public--enjoy Cuba, sir!) takes Bush by the elbow and directs him away from the unstable and explosive substance. If only the same had been done, years ago, in Texas.

Why doesn't snoop dogg live in amsterdam?
It would solve all of these legal problems he has--well, at least the ones that come from being charged with possession. So, anyway, I was scrolling through the meagre cable offerings (it's like everyone in this country has something better to do than watch T.V.) and happened upon Snoop Dogg on a Dutch talk show. Snoop--well, let's just say that he's probably one of the few people who can smoke that much and remain ambulatory. The host brought up Dick Cheney, and that was it--Snoop gives an editorial about Cheney, including the words "he's a fucking asshole" and "Dick Cheney can suck my dick."
